The day so far
I wrote and sent of a letter to the editor of Västerbottens Kuriren. Now I’ll just have to wait and see if they publish it. I used the word ‘colonialism’ in it though, so I’m pretty sure they won’t publish it. Read some of the chapters in the book I am reviewing for Northwords Now. Translated a couple of adverts into Swedish. The dating site ads have been largely replaced by...

Saami rights and all that, but in Swedish. Google translate it if you want to read it.

neetainari: And yeah, I get it that it’s not your responsibility to make me. But most of the stuff I come across is highly problematic to me as an indigenous person. It seems like a mix-and-match of leftover myths, some of them originating within indigenous cultures that still exist. And it seems that almost every person who claims shamanism as a foundation of their beliefs has never been NEAR...

Things I am going to do today
Write a thing for the largest papers in Umeå, arguing for a mandatory introductory South Saami or Ume Saami course for all children in the council’s schools as a way to show that the Saami aren’t just something exotic and distant but that we actually exist. And I am going to use the Swedish curriculum to my advantage. And I will get the shite published as well.

ILO169 and Umeå
One of the things I despise about Umeå’s future as the capital of European culture in 2014 is the way the council is pushing everything stereotypically Saami, while completely ignoring real issues facing the Saami. Cultural appropriation does not only refer to white people in feather bonnets, cultural appropriation is just as much a council that chooses to display stereotypical depictions...

Anonymous asked: Hey! I remember reading something on your blog about who is considered indigenous. I had a feeling you were missing someone but I wasn't 100%, but I've thought it through and thought it was worth mentioning. There's a few native ethnic groups in Poland (Poles, Kashubians, Silesians, and I think also Prussian Lithuanians), but Gorals/Highlanders (Górale) have always, to me,...

‘All My Relations’ by Pura Fé (Tuscarora)
To our elders who teach us of our creation and of our past so that we may preserve it for ancestors yet to come This is dedicated to our relatives before us, thousands of years ago And to the 150 million who were exterminated across the Western Hemisphere in the first four hundred year’s time, starting in 1492 To those who have kept their homelands And to the nations extinct due to mass...

As do other Saami languages, Icelandic, Faroese and Huautla Mazatec. Preaspiration is pretty uncommon, but these languages can’t be the only ones who use it, right?

A Chianalas ciùin
A translation of a Swedish song called O Tysta Ensamhet (O silent solitude) that I used to know and sing when I was younger. In short it tells of a man who curses love as it has robbed him of his first true love, leaving him broken-hearted in a state of silent solitude and depression.  A chianalas ciùin, cin a chaidh mi airson àigh a gheibhear; teirgeadh mo làithean am measg do-bhròn...

My job
I got three staff clothing items today; the first being a t-shirt that I am pretty sure was actually meant to be worn by an underweight meerkat, the second being a red polo shirt that is four sizes too big and the third one being a grey hoodie that’s actually wearable.

Anonymous asked: I'm sorry if this is a really silly question but, do you ever feel like you have to choose between your backgrounds? I'm a teen with a mixed heritage and on top of that a migrant. I feel so confused and often feel forced to choose. I'm never enough to be either. I don't know why it plays such major role in my life. I just never feel accepted anywhere.

Indigenous endangered languages
A couple of things; first there is this persistent myth that indigenous languages, by virtue of being perceived and talked about in terms of antiquity and romanticism lack words for modern things, such as skateboards and computers, while at the same time lacking the ability to form curses. Not only is an indigenous person seen as someone whose language restricts them from partaking in the...

Tomorrow's going to be soooooo busy.
I have a meeting with my job tomorrow morning at 10am to 2pm and then I teach Gaelic from 5-7pm and then I sing from 7-10pm and then I might head to the session and then I might die.  Is this what being an adult feels like? All work and no play. Oh, wait, I work as an activity leader - it’s more like all play and no work but loads of travel back and forth between Edinburgh and Stirling...
