The only way you can get one is if you fill out an application form from the National Eagle Repository and you, personally, can produce a certification that proves that you’re enrolled with a federally recognised Native American tribe. When applying for an eagle feather, you have to state the type and age of the feather you would like to receive and in order for your feathers to be legal,...

Soon off to Edinburgh for my interview.
Too bad my trousers are still in the washing machine and I don’t own a tumble dryer. Actually, I just took them out of my washing machine.  Oh well, she said ‘make an impression, be unique and prove that you want this job’ (which is why I have a powerpoint able to challenge the awesomeness of HIMYM pie charts) - maybe coming to my interview without anything on my legs is the way forward...

I’m pretty sure the jeep’s more native than most unnamed twice-removed-princesses.  Oìdhche mhath a chàirdean, chì mi a-maireach sibh. goodnight guys, see youse the morrow.

This is why I can't post anything on Tumblr
As people can’t read. Here’s just one example of this. Wait, I’m confused… So a Cherokee woman told me that my spirit animal was a fox, and this is actually a big part of my own spirituality.  Of course she did. Of course she was Cherokee. Of course Harry Potter is oppressing your spiritual beliefs.  I am so sorry for making a sarcastic post about the use of a phrase which I find...

Gapta - The South Saami traditional dress
Men: Budtestahke - the welted edge around the v-neck of a gapta. Gåahke - the collar is most often red and always stiff.  Boengeskuvmie - a piece of clothing worn around the neck, embroidered with pewter wires. Beelte - a belt, embroidered with pewter wires or beads, depending on your age. Voedtegh - handwoven shoelaces. Tjohpe - a traditional hat worn by men and women alike; men wear blue...

Anonymous asked: I had this really cool idea for the native community of tumblr, basically everybody translates "My culture is not a trend" into their native language and then somebody with good calligraphy puts it all together. It might be a nice thing to be used to raise awareness about Cultural Appropriation (and also to raise awareness about the large number of endangered languages, who knows it...

I'm supposed to go to a cèilidh tonight
and at the moment I really can’t be bothered putting on my kilt.  ‘The traditional dress of a Gael is a boiler suit’.

Grandfather
Back when I was young, he says - the voice is deeper now, the words different from before - the northern lights used to sing and the night was a green day centred around the pole star.   The words he used lacked a translation, they created no English echo in my ears -  the singing ice and the crusty snow indistinguishable from the sound of his old man voice.

Invasion Day
They declared her a virgin and then pierced her repeatedly with a foreign flag  in the name of ius primæ noctis; hic est terra nullius, the original people declared animals and placed without voices on the coins of this invasion.  A woman from Botany Bay had tattooed  four numbers in invisible ink across her silenced lips, in the evening 1788 was hallowed as the birth  of a nation already 40,000...

Two non-offensive alternatives to the term "spirit...
Daemon - The only one you’re appropriating is Pullman and by appropriating Pullman you’re upsetting no-one, save possibly the Pope. Patronus - Wizards everywhere are more than willing to lend you this term and the geekiness is an added bonus. I just read that geeks are sexy, or so the Metro, so, there you go, a patronus is clearly your next ascribed accessory.

I need to come up with a ten minute foolproof way...
It’s a job as an activity leader for an international EFL school in Edinburgh and I have had a similar job for the past four summers, so this shouldn’t be so hard, but I was told ‘you’ll get 10 minutes to do whatever you want to prove to me that you’re the one for the job’ so now I am sat here angsting about what I should do. Directing and starring in my own ‘I am the best...

I have tea and whisky
I will take your advices. As for the pot, I don’t mind others using it but wouldn’t use it myself. But I could burn some dried meadowsweet, the smell’s quite pleasant and reminds me of home and my childhood. Meadowsweet’s got a calming effect on people and it’s also a good spice to use if you’re making your own alcoholic beverages. My mum used to tell me loads...

The journal article I’m currently reading is emphasising a bone I have to pick with post-colonialism and indigenous studies; written by two indigenous women on the issue of racism towards indigenous people within academia and submitted to one of the most influential journals in the States, it was initially rejected with no real explanation as to why, though the following answer was given...

A man's a man for a' that ... Or something
That awkward moment when your neighbour knocks on your door and asks if, ‘just today perhaps’, what with it being Burn’s Night, you would ‘consider singing something by Burns instead of all those Gaelic songs you use to sing’. I guess I should have realised that they probably could hear me sing if I could hear my downstairs neighbour’s parrot blether away to itself most hours of the...

The minimum wage in the UK, if you're aged 21 and...
That is £2 less than what the person with the lowest salary in Sweden earns per hour. But don’t think it stops there; if you’re an apprentice, you earn £2.60 an hour during your first year.  That’s £416 a month if you work full time. My rent is £400, nothing included.  Literally every apprentice would have to get at least LHA to survive, but they’re obviously being...

Why on earth am I even bothering?
I am arguing with someone who is convinced that a person under the age of 35 that is on benefits, amounting to at the most £5520 in a year if they’re not disabled, somehow earns more than the average person in the UK, who earns £24,000 a year. Granted, most people earn less, roughly £18,000 a year, but to even try to argue that this is less than what someone on benefits gets is just...
