The current fine for being in possession of an eagle feather in the United States of America, unless you’re an enrolled member of a federally recognised tribe, is $25,000
The only way you can get one is if you fill out an application form from the National Eagle Repository and you, personally, can produce a certification that proves that you’re enrolled with a federally recognised Native American tribe.
When applying for an eagle feather, you have to state the type and age of the feather you would like to receive and in order for your feathers to be legal, you need a permit for each and every individual feather.
The current waiting list for getting to own an eagle feather is more than two years. And that’s for an individual feather, not a number large enough to make a feather bonnet.
Anyone who isn’t enrolled with a federally recognised tribe is considered to be non-native according to the current eagle feather law and Native Americans are prohibited from passing on eagle feathers to anyone who isn’t native in the eyes of the law.
